Women perform Umrah in almost the same way as men, with a few differences in clothing and practice. This guide covers the practical points our female customers ask about most. For religious rulings, please follow the guidance of a trusted scholar.
Ihram for women
- ✓There is no special Ihram garment for women — wear loose, modest clothing of any colour.
- ✓The face and hands should be uncovered while in Ihram; many women use a cap under the scarf to keep it in place.
- ✓Make your intention and recite the Talbiyah quietly.
- ✓Women do not do raml (brisk walking) or idtiba (uncovering the shoulder), and walk at a normal pace in Sa’i.
- ✓After Sa’i, cut about a fingertip’s length from the end of the hair.
Menstruation during Umrah
A woman who is menstruating can enter Ihram and do everything except Tawaf and prayer. She waits until her period ends and she has bathed, then completes Tawaf, Sa’i and the hair cut. Plan a few extra days in Makkah if your dates may overlap, and ask a scholar about your specific situation.
Travelling with or without a mahram
Saudi rules on women travelling for Umrah without a mahram have changed in recent years. Our team will explain the current requirements for your age and situation before you book, and can arrange group travel if you prefer.
Practical tips
- ✓Women have separate prayer areas and entrances — agree on a meeting point with your family.
- ✓The Rawdah has separate visiting times for women, booked through the Nusuk app.
- ✓Choose a hotel close to the Haram so you can return to rest easily.
- ✓Pack comfortable abayas, extra scarves, and unscented toiletries for while you are in Ihram.
- ✓Keep your phone charged and save your hotel address in Arabic.
