Makkah and Madinah are roughly 450 km apart. Pilgrims usually travel by the Haramain high-speed train, by coach, or by private car. Here is how they compare.
Haramain high-speed train
- ✓Fastest option: around 2.5 hours between Makkah and Madinah stations.
- ✓Comfortable seats, with economy and business classes.
- ✓Stations are outside the central areas, so you need a taxi to and from your hotel.
- ✓Book in advance, especially in Ramadan and school holidays.
Coach (bus)
- ✓Usually 5–6 hours including a rest stop.
- ✓The most economical option, often included in economy and group packages.
- ✓Picks up and drops off close to hotels.
Private car (GMC or similar)
- ✓About 4.5–5 hours, door to door.
- ✓Best for families, elderly parents and lots of luggage.
- ✓Can include Ziyarat stops on the way, such as Badr, on request.
Which should you choose?
For speed, choose the train. For the lowest cost, the coach. For families with elderly members or lots of luggage, a private car is usually the most comfortable. We can include any of these in your package.
